JOHN LAWRENCE: PIECE TO MARK TIME

11 April - 30 April 2012

Throughout April ANDOR is developing a programme in collaboration with artist John Lawrence. The programme takes place inside the cafe and restaurant ANDOR has established at 3 Mare Street. For Spring of 2012 ANDOR invited John Lawrence to design a new artwork for the space. His video installation entitled, Piece to Mark Time [really only for your benefit George], takes the form of a set of synchronised Sony cube monitors. The artwork has been embedded into the building at 3 Mare Street and represents the starting point of an evolving, collaborative framework for both the change and alteration of John Lawrence's artwork, as well as the introduction of other artists and artworks into the space. The cafe and restaurant, Hackney Bureau, was designed as a social space for the development and experimentation of new artworks, in a continuation of the programme ANDOR has been running since 2010 at a variety of different venues. At Hackney Bureau artworks and events occur, evolve and disappear in the space, often with no distinct or predetermined timescale. They represent a conversation and dialogue with artists about the social functions and implementation of their artwork and practice, as well as room for an alternative site in which to experiment outside a formal gallery space. John Lawrence's artwork, Piece to Mark Time [really only for your benefit George], is indicative of this process and experiments with the prosaic and temporal functioning of the space throughout the day. Through writings, discussions, print and online hosting different elements of the project and the artwork will be articulated and disseminated.

On Wednesday 11th of April Matt Drage has organised the event 'Mind, Body and Art after (Art after) the Internet'. A talk and panel discussion followed by dinner at ANDOR. Using John Lawrence's artwork as a starting point the event puts forward arguments for the continued relevance of bodily existence and embodied experience in life and art after the internet.
